The Versatile Applications of Radioisotopes in Modern Medicine

  1. Diagnostic Imaging: Radioisotopes for imaging techniques, such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in which Fluorine-18 is used to produce detailed images of metabolic processes in the body.

  2. Cancer Treatment: In case of Radiotherapy we have Cobalt-60 and Iodine-131 to target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. In case of placing them into or near the tumours, we have Cesium-137 and Iridium-192 for localized treatment.

  3. Cardiology: If there is a need for myocardial perfusion imaging to assess heart function and detect coronary artery disease, we provide Technetium-99m and Thallium-201.

  4. Bone Scanning: Isotopes like Strontium-89 and Technetium-99m are provided to diagnose bone fractures, infections, and diseases such as osteoporosis and bone cancer.

  5. Renal Function Tests: Radioisotopes like Iodine-123 and Technetium-99m are provided to evaluate kidney function and diagnose renal disorders.
